G E N E R A L R U B R I C S

CONCERNING THE KALENDAR AND PRECEDENCE OF OBSERVANCES

1. LITURGICAL DAY: The Liturgical Day, with its Office and Mass, is of a Sunday, or of a Feast, or of a Feria; according to the Kalendar and the rank of the Observance falling on that Day. The celebration of a Liturgical Day ordinarily begins with Vespers and ends with None or Noon Office on the Day itself; but Sundays, Solemnities and Greater Feasts have Second Vespers.

2. PRECEDENCE: The precedence of all Observances is determined by their position on the following Table:

A: Primary Solemnities: Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, Solemnity of Saint Benedict.

B: Principal Sundays: The Sundays of Advent, of Septuagesima, of Lent, Low Sunday.

C: The Octave Days of Easter and of Pentecost.

D: Privileged Ferias: Ash Wednesday, the Days of Holy Week, the Vigil of Pentecost, All Souls’ Days of the Church and of the Monastic order.

E: Other Solemnities (Printed in red CAPITAL LETTERS in the Kalendar).

F: Greater Feasts(Printed in Black CAPITAL LETTERS in the Kalendar).

G: Ordinary Sundays throughout the Year.

H: The Days of Lent, including the Lenten Ember Days.

I: Simple Feasts (printed in Ordinary Type), commemorated only during Lent.

J: The Octaves of Christmas, Epiphany, and Ascension.

K: The other Ember Days, and Rogation Days.

L: Vigils (not observed during Advent and Lent).

M: The Ferias of Advent and Septuagesima (always commemorated when another Observance has precedence).

N: Commemorations (in (Parentheses)) in the Kalendar).

When two Observances fall on the same Day, that higher on the Table has precedence. Both the Office and Mass are of this ranking Observance (except for those Observances designated COMMEMORATIONS, for the celebration of which see Par. 8 below); and the outranked Observances are commemorated in descending order of precedence unless otherwise directed.

3. SUNDAYS: the Office of a Sunday begins with Vespers of the preceding Saturday and ends with Compline of Sunday. There are two classes of Sundays: PRINCIPAL and ORDINARY. Principal Sundays are the Sundays of Advent, of Septuagesima, of Lent and Passiontide, Easter Sunday, Low Sunday, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday. These Sundays have precedence over all other Observances; and Solemnities and Greater Feasts falling there upon are transferred to the next unhindered Feria (Par. 9 below). Lesser Observances falling on Principal Sundays are not transferred, but are commemorated ; except on Easter, Low Sunday and Pentecost, when they are omitted altogether for that Year. Ordinary Sundays are the remaining Sundays of the Year.

4. FEASTS: There are two classes of Feasts: HIGH (Solemnities and Greater Feasts)and SIMPLE . The Office of a High Feast (Solemnity or Greater Feast) begins with I Vespers and ends with Compline of the Feast Day. On High Feasts, Proper Psalms and Te Deum are recited in the Office, and the Creed is recited at Mass. Certain Solemnities are celebrated with an Octave (Par. 7 below). The Office of a Simple Feast begins with Vespers on the evening preceding and ends with None on the Feast itself. On Simple Feasts, the occurent Ferial Psalms are retained, and Te Deum and the Creed are not said.

5. FERIAS: The Office of a Feria ordinarily begins with the Night Office and ends with Compline; but before a Sunday or Solemnity, the Ferial Office ends with None. There are three classes of Ferias: PRIVILEGED, MAJOR, and COMMON. Privileged Ferias are Ash Wednesday, the Days of Holy Week, the Vigil of Pentecost, and the two All Souls’ Days of the Church and of the Monastic Order, over which no other Observance may have precedence. Major Ferias are Vigils, Ember Days, Rogation Days, and all the days of Lent. Common Ferias are the remaining Days of the Year, on which the Ordinary Ferial Office of the Psalter is recited, and Mass is said of the preceding Sunday, of a Commemorated Observance, or otherwise ad Libitum.

6. VIGILS: These are preparatory Observances before certain High Feasts. Their celebration begins with the Night Office and ends with None of the Feria preceding the Solemnity; so that when the feast falls on Monday, the Vigil is anticipated on the previous Saturday; except the Vigils of Christmas and Epiphany, which rank as Simple Feasts and so are not anticipated. Vigils are not observed in Advent and Lent.

7. OCTAVES: An Octave is the celebration of a Feast for eight successive Days, the first being the Feast-Day itself. The Days within an Octave rank as Simple Feasts, But yield precedence to Simple Feasts falling on such Days of their own right. The Octaves of Easter and Pentecost are Special: Solemnities falling in these Octaves are transferred, and lesser Observances are omitted or commemorated as specially directed in the Proper. All Octaves cease in Lent, and from 16th December until Christmas.

8. COMMEMORATIONS: Lesser Observances designated as Commemorations do not have full celebration; but are observed by Collect, Secret and Postcommunion at Mass, while in the Office (at Lauds and Vespers) commemoration is made as directed in the Breviary (i.e. Antiphon, Versicle and Response, followed by Collect). On Ferias, Mass may be celebrated of the Commemoration; but on Sundays Mass may not be celebrated of a Commemoration. This same procedure is used to commemorate outranked Observances; except that a Sunday, when outranked by a Solemnity, is always commemorated at both I and II Vespers. It is to be noted that the total number of Collects may never exceed three; any Commemorations in excess of that number are simply omitted.

9. TRANSFERRENCE: When a Solemnity or Greater Feast would fall on a Principal Sunday, a Privileged Feria, or a Day within a Special octave, it is transferred to the next unhindered Feria following: where it retains the same rank and privileges as before. Lesser Observances are not transferred, but are commemorated or omitted, according to these Rubrics. When several Feasts are transferred successively, they are reassigned in the same order n which they originally stood in the Kalendar.

10. VOTIVE OBSERVANCES: These constitute separate devotions apart from the Liturgical Day. Where ecclesiastical Authority enjoins or allows, such Observances may be celebrated on Common Ferias in place of the Ordinary Ferial Office, and Mass. Commemorations are made in the usual manner except that in the Office and Mass for the Departed no Commemorations of any kind are permitted. Votives are not observed during Advent and Lent.

11. LOCAL OBSERVANCES: With ecclesiastical approval the superiors of diocesan and local congregations may add to the general Kalendar, for celebration within their respective territories, the following Observances (and these only); or if they be already in the Kalendar, may raise the same in rank; provided that such additions are among the Saints or Mysteries recognised by the Orthodox Church: (a) the feast of the Patron or Titular of a congregation – Solemnity with Octave; (b) the Anniversary of the Dedication of any church or congregation – Solemnity; (c) the Feasts of Saints who lived in or who were members of a congregation – Simple Feasts. Once determined and approved by proper Authority, all such Observances become permanent items of the local Kalendars, subject to the operation of these Rubrics regarding precedence and transference.

Bless, Father!

Your prayers for a sometimes vagrant Orthodox sinner are both asked for and appreciated.
